More Professional Opportunities for Theater Artists
January 6, 2010 by Dennis Baker
I am enjoying reading the New Play Blog, from the American Voices New Play Institute at Arena Stage. I appreciate David Dower‘s recent post about how everyone’s different passions are part of the whole that is part of “the system” (far too casually for his comfort). Since I referred to the current theater system in my previous post, I feel I should be more specific.
In referring to “the system”, I was focusing on the current profession of theater artists. As Walters points on in the comment section, “If, among EQUITY actors, there is almost 86% unemployment, there IS NO PROFESSION.” The goal for me in 2010 (and looks to be Dower’s goal as well) is to find different ways theater is being created so that this can be a profession for more artists in all regions (urban and rural) to connect with more audience members.

There is nothing worse than having a casting director, or director, seem not interested during an audition because they have seen a monologue way too many times. Check out the e-book to see if your audition monologues are considered over done.
